The government has launched a campaign in 2010 to reduce the number of work accident cases in the UK’s farming community.
According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), between January and November 2009, 38 people were killed in a farming accident – bringing the total to 455 during the past decade - whilst a further 589 people were seriously hurt.
In fact, agriculture is one of the most dangerous sectors of employment in Britain: whilst only 1.5% of the country’s working population are employed by the industry, farming accounts for 20 per cent of workplace deaths annually. Typical work accident scenarios for farmers include handling or lifting objects and dangerous contact with moving machinery.
Rising levels of agriculture-related injuries can often be attributed to increasingly stressful working conditions. Increased importing of foreign products by supermarkets is putting the British farming business under strain, whilst fluctuating weather conditions have also caused poor crop yields. Many farmers are working long hours under tight deadlines to ensure their survival.
The HSE has launched a campaign called ‘Make the Promise’ aimed at getting farmers to resolve to make their premises and work practices safer, and 15,000 agricultural workers have already pledged to join the scheme.
If you work in the agriculture industry, your employer has a duty of care to ensure all equipment is properly maintained and that you are trained in how to use it, hopefully negating the need for any accident claims.
For those of you that have unfortunately suffered a farming-related personal injury that you believe is due to your employer’s neglect and wish to make injury claims, we at Claims Solicitors can offer you thorough legal advice for accident compensation claims.
